While receiving a nice plaque as an award or reward for a job well done might appeal to some employees, it isn’t going to appeal to everybody. Thankfully, though, there are a lot of other great options available!

Some employees just want verbal recognition

We’ve known several people who were just as happy to be acknowledged with a, “Hey! That was an awesome job!” as they were a certificate of recognition. In fact, we know of several who prefer the verbal recognition to the paper certificate. To them, the words mean more than the paper.

What can you do? If you have an employee who shines with verbal recognition, give them honest feedback and acknowledge when they shine.

Recognition through a random act of kindness or service

Other employees love being recognized (and surprised) by a genuine act of kindness. For example: when an employee has some great numbers, it’s nice to get ready to go home for the day, only to find out that their closing duties have already been done by their team lead!

Now that’s an awesome end to a day right there.

The award of time

Other employees value time above all else. After a great sale, for example, a more introverted employee may appreciate some downtime to relax and regenerate their energy levels before heading back to interact with clients. Other employees may love getting a few minutes extra to spend on their lunch break or getting to head home just a few minutes early. To them, the best award is more time.

High-fives and handshakes

Other employees love to be recognized with a high-five or a handshake. Sure, they may also appreciate an award or some other sort of recognition. But sometimes there’s just nothing more satisfying than an awesome high-five from your team.

Awards and Rewards

Finally, other employees may love getting an actual award or reward for a job well done. For example, it’s common to thank employees with a small gift after five and ten years of service. After all, it’s that kind of dedication that helps drive your business!
